I think it's somewhat relevent. We can't talk of horns and trumpets as though they're all the same. Look at the tremendous variety of horns that are being made. Who's to say when a horn player should use a descant, or whether it's OK to use a triple horn or not. When should a trumpet player switch over to a D/Eb trumpet? The modern day bass trombone bears little resemblence to the bass bones of old.
