Thanks for everyone's comments. I was in Vienna for twelve years, from 1979 to 1989 and then again in 1992 studying and playing (trombone). I knew professor Hummel personally, but met Ronald Pisarkiewicz only once personally, though I saw him dozens of times in concerts and the opera. Several more explanations are in order here, first that all the wind chairs in the orchestra are double and the large string section alternates, so there can be an opera and a VPO concert on the same night. The music director conducts some premieres and works that interest him at the opera. Not everything in the VPO is rascist/sexist, some things really happen to keep the sound, the horn sound is glorious. Mainly people from Vienna play these instruments, it's logical they get the jobs. Congrats again to Sugimaya, he must be absolutely superb. John
