The statement was made: Silver plating is 0.0004 inches thick. I simply calculated the surface area of a (somewhat, but reasonably so) simplifed instrument and multiplied that by 0.0004". That comes to 1.8 cubic inches, which is about 3/4 of a pound. That part is indisputable.

But that doesn't mean the assumptions are correct. If the plating is .0005 in some spots, and .0001 in (perhaps many) other spots, then the silver on the instrument could be quite a bit less than if you assume it is uniformly .0004" thick.
