I really think that the demands a lot of composers are putting on the tubists (finally) are driving this shift. If you look at any recent compositions the ranges are extended and so are the technical demands. Players want the security of a shorter horn for the higher pitches and rapid passages but the length of 14 ft to give the big sound with dark center.
