It would seem that the length of the fingers and thumb, position of the thumb ring and the presence or absence of a fifth valve on the thumb would all play a part. With my long fingers and a fifth valve, I need to either curve the fingers or play way down on the spatulas or I can't reach the fifth valve. When I had a four-valve horn, I put the pad of my thumb on the ring and played with the fingers straight.
