There's such a thing as the 'spirit of the law', and I believe that this does obey the spirit of the law. You've paid for the music, you're playing the music, you're not giving copies to some other band. To me, this is much less of an infringement than borrowing music (rather than buying your own copy), but borrowing someone else's originals is perfectly legal. I feel the same about making tapes from records. If I OWN a record, I think nothing of cutting a tape to listen to in the car (and to save wear and tear on my 33RPM vinyl-saurs). But I would not make a copy of someone else's record, or one I borrowed from the library.

Now, about paying royalties when you perform the music....
