Back in my younger days (before I found a house in the 'burbs) I used to run into problems from time to time. I found that if I spoke with my neighbors to explain what was going on and was considerate about quiting at a reasonable hour I rarely had a problem. The one time I did run into a sticky situation with a landlord it ended up in the local housing court since it turns out I was not breaking the local noise ordinances so I could not be evicted.
I would suggest that you talk with your neighbors first and just in case check out the local laws.
