I know you must pay for recording rights whether you are distributing the recording for free or not. You can check on the web with the Harry Fox agency. They handle most of the licensing for ASCAP and BMI. I don't recall the exact address but if you do a search you'll find it. I don't know about just performing the music, especially if it is used for a religious service. What is the sense of buying music if you can't perform it?
