Sean's post reflects all of my sentiments.

Music is, let's face it, nothing more than extremely well-controlled sounds. Someone can ENJOY playing - and others can ENJOY listening - to music EVEN IF it is not performed in the most technically perfect nor most intellectually profound way that it was ever performed.

At age 14, my kid stood up and played the Haydn oboe concerto.
Fabulous job and far beyond her years?... yes.
As accurate and as interesting as Joe Robinson in the New York Phil. would have played it?... of course not. That's silly.
Further, she LEARNED a LOT from working very, very hard on it, and from standing up and peforming it.
Did working on it at age 14 help her when her oboe professor required that she re-visit the piece at age 17?...What do you think?...of course it did!!!

We will play what we will play. Music is not to be "graded". (sorry, band directors) It is to be "played", if we CAN and if we WANT to.
