I don't mean to jump the gun on Steve, as he actually knew De Nunzio, but it's been a couple of days and he hasn't repied. Vinal Smith was principal tubist with the BSO from the mid-40s until Chester succeeded him in 1965. He, as Chester does now, played the Pops season at Symphony Hall, and the recordings. De Nunzio played the Esplanade and did the tours. He also happened to be Fiedler's barber. By all accounts, a colorful character, as well as an accomplished player. Only in those days, and in that place, could the conductor's barber also be his tuba player.
