I think you are probably on to something there. I know I tend to place notes on a mental "keyboard" which for me makes them easier to keep track of, and probably could be seen as a chord, progression, etc.

On the other hand, having returned to the tuba but having played the piano most of the time in between, sometimes I find myself rhythmically challenged (other ways also), in a single line part. On piano, I think I do rhythm in the context of the other notes a lot of the time (As in 1/16 in the right hand after the 1/8 in the left, etc., as opposed to "counting".) So without the other notes for reference, having to work quite a bit on reading more complicated rhythms by recognizing note patterns in a string.

Just a few thoughts on a general subject which I have been contemplating also....
