There were ophicleides made with valves--ophicleide-ventil. They were usually made with Stolzel valves or some less widely used arrange, such as double valves. Bevan has a picture of such a beast. The form that use tone holes is by far the common form.

Bevan also mentions several players well-known in England, the most famous of which seems to be Samuel Hughes, who toured in the U.S. on one occasion. But even Harry Barlow played ophicleide from time to time during his long tenure across the turn of the century with the Halle orchestra.
