Listen to some good ska music. A LOT of good ska music. Play in a ska band. Seriously. I've been listening to ska music for years, even before I took up the tuba, and have never had problems with upbeats at all, keeping tempo or otherwise. The repititious upbeats in the guitar, (especially if you're playing it...) develop a great sense of syncopated placement. Might seem to be a silly idea, but my trombonist friend is one of the few people I know whom has impecable upbeat technique, and we both play ska.
