Another important consideration often overlooked is comfort. If the horn forces you into an awkward position it's going to be a pain to play by the end of a three-hour rehearsal or a four-hour gig. If it's a pain then you will start finding excuses for cutting down on practice time. If it fits you right then you will want to play more, and THAT will lead to a better sound. In particular, pay attention to the height and angle of the mouthpiece and the position of the valves. What's just right for one tubist is often extremely awkward for the next.
