Tubists and Baseball Players

O.K. - We've discussed and digested the great tubists and which one(s) we like the most.

For years the argument over which baseball player is the best of all-time has focused around the changes in the game from each player's era (bats, balls, number of team/players, greater publicity, etc.) and how that renders comparisons impossible.

Given the differences in instrument manufacturing and the recording industry, is it possible to compare August Helleberg or Bill Bell to Pat Sheridan or Sam Pilafian? Are there other differences that should be taken into consideration when (or if we should compare) comparing musicians from different eras.
