Ordering horns from Mirafone, Alexander or Gronitz, lacquering is an ADDED cost to the instruments, so is silver. Since Americans want bright shiny horns (at least initially) they are ordered with lacquer and a few are ordered silver plated, to cater to those clients who want silver. Peter Hirsbrunner just plates ALL of his tubas as a matter of course. I actually prefer unlacquered horns for their sound, but they can get pretty ugly looking pretty quickly.
