I recall seeing a picture of the Boston Symphony in the 1880's or so in which the tubist was holding a small top-action tuba. I know that Conn made side-action piston double-bell euphoniums as early as 1894. I have often wondered if the first side-action piston tubas were originally rotary valve tubas that were retrofitted with pistons. I also remember an old Boston euphonium at my high school that had three upright pistons and an "upright" key for a fourth rotary valve. An interesting question, Rick.
