All of you were very accomodating. FWIW, after much reflection and a little bit of experimenting I think Sean was right on. I've been able to push in several of my slides a quarter inch or more(I'll have to cut the slides on the F if I ever play w/ a group that wants to play above A=440) and relax both my chops and my air at the same time. The 'blowback' has subsided. I wasn't actually thinking of the newfound stuffiness as being negative but as things begin to resettle I'm realizing that I was working much harder than I needed to.
