From what I heard Gary Offenlach (returning principal in Utah symphony, formerly at Boston University) played in Vienna for a short stay. I assume that was before Pisarkiewicz. The european orchestras typically have two principals for each instrument including tuba. There was an older viennese tubist that used to be coprincipal, but did not do much of the playing. I think his retirement resulted in the tuba audition held in 1995 or 1996. All this is info I picked up when I lived there 1991-1993 and studied with Jon Sass.
