The tone of this message is calm and realistic, not harsh or defensive...

A real musician, in today’s world, has to get their musical satisfaction where they can. All of us that put clothes on our backs and bread on our table have to play gigs that are not always musically satisfying. The audience that pays to hear us doesn't necessarily want to hear Brahms, Mozart, Sting, Yo Yo Ma, or any of the folks you might call "real musicians." Some of the greatest composers in history wrote music that they didn't particularly like because it fed them while pleasing the mainstream audience.

In order to perform the work of "real musicians" we must play gigs that pay. That, my friend, is what they call "a day job." The more important angle though is this - a "real musician" tries to give every piece the same attention. Why? Because that is what a true musician does. Every tune that is put in front of us just might touch someone out there. THAT is what it is all about...

It isn't about me; it's about my audience.
