I've been off tuba for about twenty years (except for an occasional fill-in), and I've had a beard for about as long. When I recently became serious about playing the horn again, I disgustedly discovered that I had no tone or range because I couldn't get a seal around the edges of the mouthpiece. I buzzed off the lower lip and had a huge improvement in tone, but still couldn't get low notes. When I finally gave in and zapped the moustache, BINGO! I could play down to BBBb and up to f above the staff.

Folks who have thin facial hair can handle hair under the rim, but those of us who have beards like steel wool just are going to have problems getting a seal.

The only real hassle I now have with the beard is being told that I look like an Amish farmer or an overweight Leprechaun.
