Alan King did a wonderful monologue once about how the airline baggage handlers would slash his Gucci luggage but when they found granny's luggage in an old cardboard box tied up with string would handle it gently. So he started putting his Gucci luggage into old cardboard boxes. (It was very funny when he told it, honest!)
In 1968 I flew from NY to Jamaica to visit a friend, and brought along an old junk tuba in a thin home-made canvas bag, which I checked in with my luggage. It received not a single dent or scratch on the way down, but on the way back somebody's bottle of port wine broke and left the bag a little sticky. That's all I had to complain about.
