The LSO has ALWAYS had the best string section and sound (in my opinion) and the winds, brass and percussion are top flight as well. The reason J.W. recorded in London was purely monetary. George Lucas has always been against using union workers. Whether they are grips, makeup artists, musicians or whomever. The LSO (and every other european orch) will record movie and TV sound tracks for their regular session fee with no residuals on the backend.

There are far more detailed reasons beyond money that make producers go overseas to record their movie scores, but it would take several hours to go into all of them here.
