I was going to mention just that. You probably are trying to "open up" too much in the lower register. This causes a different kind of tension, as well as perhaps too much air suddenly hitting the back of the throat and uvula (sp?) which could cause a gag reflex.

I suggest you back off some on the air, particularly on the intake, and see if that helps.
