Well, I got so frustrated with that same problem that I just ended up taking it to the music shop and getting a modern mouthpiece shank put on. It won't affect tuning much since the tuba played in tune with the main tuning slide all the way in and my mouthpiece hanging in the old shank about 3 millimeteres.
