The larger the euphonium you play on, the less you need a large mouthpiece. I play a hirsbrunner exclsive euphonium, and I find that my Doug Elliot 101 rim (which is slightly larger than a 51D rim) is very comfortable and I have no problems with either high or low range. My horn will produce a large, dark, full sound basically regardless of mouthpiece. I find larger rims to be much harder to control at upper dynamics and also most difficult to play in tune.
