You can just pull the magnet away from the horn and it will let go of the ball. You have to hold the horn such that the ball will go where you want it to when you let it go. The pull is not so hard that this is particularly difficult.

You get the ball where you want it, just roll it down the bell. You can grab it with the magnet at the bottom bow, and drag it to the dent, or you can turn the horn until the ball rolls to the dent area through gravity, and then grab it with the magnet.

The softness of the material on the face of the magnet has to be just right to prevent the ball from making bumps. I think part of the key to the Dent Magnet is that the pull isn't too strong--you have to go over an area repeatedly to get any effect. This gradual movement of the brass is more effective and less likely to cause ripples, and it also means that a single pass is unlikely to cause damage to undented areas.
