If your spring is rusted, it is getting ready to break (it will wait for an important
audition or solo to do so---springs know about these things).
A new set of mousetrap-type springs can't cost more than a few dollars, and you should
be able to get some made of silicon bronze or stainless steel, so they won't rust again. Alternatively, it is very easy to wind your own mousetrap springs.

Clocksprings (flat stock wound into a coil) are more of a problem, but a well-stocked
repair shop should be able to help you. If they can't consider a clock repair shop.
