Hey Kev,

If you asked my opinion, which you didn't, I would suggest option C, get a Conn 56J. I'm sorry...I'm a little biased. But, that isn't why I am replying. One of my previous teachers, Ed Diefes, used a modfied G-50 for a good bit of his playing. As you may or may not know, Ed is the tuba player with the Syracuse Symphony and one of the 5 finalists in the Boston Symphony auditions. He uses his G-50 for quintet, lighter symphony work, pops concerts, and some solo playing. He does have a 6/4 Meinl Weston (2165) that he uses for all of his larger symphonic work. I don't know if he played his G-50 for the Boston audition, but when I was studying with him, he told me that he used both horns for at least a few auditions.

I hope this helps.

PS In case you were wondering, the modifications he made to his G-50 (at the time) was the removal of the 5th valve and some sort of arrangement where the leadpipe went straight into the valve cluster. I'm not sure how he did it, but I know he did it himself.
