I don't claim to be the authority on practising, just another musician who struggles to learn, but what works for me when I'm up against something that looks too big to accomplish with a deadline, I just pick it apart and take one section at a time. Lately I've been trying to learn the Mahler 5th(the bass part), which is a huge, lengthy, and difficult piece. I just decided to take one movement per day to work on, then decide which movements are the hardest(2nd & 3rd for me) and prioritize my time based on the amount of difficulty in those places. It's probably never going to be perfect, at least in this stage of my developement in string bass technique, but it's starting to come together somewhat and I'm not quite as embarrassed at rehearsals as before.
