When I saw Randy Montgomery, he was playing on a Yamaha F, the "custom" model.
I've also heard of a jazz band leader in California who uses two players on King K90 contrabass bugles in place of a string bass. No kidding, either.
I think that, like every other jazz musician, there is no "standard sound", nor any player that they all would be trying to emulate.
