Yeah its an interesting piece. Maybe concerned alot with the British (English) viewpoint and experiecnces on the 2nd World War. Nonetheless the message is strong, and the music well designed, maybe not a tuba players most exciting blow. Worth a bit of a study, and to learn the poetry by Wilfred Owen is quite chilling when we understand some of the nature of the war.
With the recordings, the one with Ben Britten and LSO is good and he had all the singers he wanted, but not as good as the NYPO with Masur, or NDR (North German Radio Symph Orch) with Elliot Gardner in terms of overall production. Each to his own though, so you decide.
