Hi Bruce,
I just put a 981 leadpipe on my old B&H Imperial which is basically like the Besson 982. It is definitely worth the expense. I mounted the leadpipe off the bell and the horn just rings now. It is great. The low register is better and the upper register intonation (above the staff) is improved also. I also put delrin valve guides on the vales and cut off the nut buster ball on the bottom. Now I think I basically have a "B&H 981" The lead pipe was very reasonably priced, like less than $50. I paid about $100 to have it mounted and the valve guides replaced. (My repair guy is ridiculously inexpensive. I almost feel guilty.)
as they say in the athletic arean, "Just do it"
