Have you looked into teaching summer lessons or teaching at a music camp? With lessons you can still work part time somewhere else and supplement your income, but if you get a good flock in your studio, you won't need the extra work. Teaching at a music camp usually doesn't pay well, but on the upside, you don't usually have time or a place to spend any money if you work at one, either. Or maybe a summerstock orchestra gig? Ohio light opera pays pretty well...
Or check out if your local music shop needs extra hands on deck. That way, you're making a fair salary, but you often can get SUBSTANTIAL discounts on music purchases. I worked at a music shop in college, and I saved a bundle on my music and manuscript paper and books, etc etc, and I mean hundreds of dollars. I figured it out and the amount I saved more than made up for getting a low-end-of-average hourly rate.

good luck, and let us know how it turns out
