The focus of the "Mozart Effect" studies were extremely narrow in scope. Part of the problem with such research is a problem with educational research in general; once focus is narrowed sufficiently to be truly rigorous, it becomes too narrow to be of practical use. Limited attention-span tests do not tell the scope of music's influence over a person's whole life. There have been other studies, particularly large-scale statistical analyses, that tell a much more meaningful tale than the "Mozart Effect" mess.

Any music teacher can probably tell you of examples of students who struggled and whose lives (and school performance) were turned around by participation in band or chorus. Those of us who teach know many things from practical experience that are not supported by research; lack of graphs and charts doesn't make them any less true.
