The purpose of music education, as well as the other arts, is to teach, inspire and enhance a student's creativity and imagination. This is why humans throughout time have given music such importance. It is these two human attributes (creativity and imagination) which influence and enhance "other" areas. Teamwork and cooperation are great side-effects of a subject that often requires individuals to work as a unit. When we advocate the side-effects of music education to the general public, we become redundant. For example, don't sports teach teamwork? Don't math classes teach math? Would you pay for something that you could purchase cheaper and more easily elsewhere? No. We need to be careful how we advocate. (This does not mean that all music educators have been teaching creativity and imagination, but this should be a goal) Well, that's enough for now...
