Doc as to the horizontal placement of the tuning slide, it's preference. I just really like that set up. Is it the main consideration, no.
I agree totally about the "mouthpiece back" being the main focus for improved playing. I do feel that I have accomplished enough in that area that it is time to have an instrument to match and continue to grow with. I can produce a beautiful sound on just about any beater out there, and I have my mentors to thank for that. It is just time to have a horn of my own and one that fits my goals.
