Before reading the avalanche of responses....I would say that you are totally unfamiliar with the "amateur scene" in the US. You have described it perfectly!! It is a social enterprise, with music secondary. The same out-of-tune, never-practice-until-the-day-before-the-concert (if at all) people who have been in the group for the last 20 years....are in CONTROL of the group. They are the librarian, the personnel manager, the people who get out and sell advertising for the programs. The community group would not exist except for them. Of course not all of them are that bad; but there are always a few who are in the social hierarchy of the group, and there is no getting rid of them, and no possible way to impose musical standards upon them. They want their friends in the group as opposed to the best possible players. And the best possible players who do join the group, go away again in time or learn to close their ears to what is going on around them.
