Back around 1990, I took some lessons with Jim Self. He had a Yamaha F tuba with the main slide rigged exactly as you describe. The trigger was in the form of a paddle that stuck straight up in the air vertically, could be pushed left or right, and sprung both ways so it returned to center.

Jim knew where he wanted every note placed, and that slide moved accordingly. A very worthy attachment to the horn. As I remember, however, it looked like a fair bit of work had been done to build the whole assembly. I don't think this is something to enter into lightly. Anything that requires modding your *main tuning slide* should be attempted with caution.
