If you have the centering spring arrangement we are discussing, that will return the slide to the normal position. All slide triggers I've seen have either a stop at one end of the travel or a centering spring arrangement of some sort.
I'm sure top players can make adjustments such as these with what is in effect a trombone slide, but as for me I just wanted to push (or pull) the handle for a few questionable notes and then let it go and have it go back to the home position all by itself.
