Rick, don't you mean blind in your RIGHT eye? A front action horn will partially block your left eye, a top action horn will partially block your right eye.
As someone who, while certainly not blind in the right eye, has sufficiently poor vision in it not to be able to read anything on the music stand, even with glasses that sort of resemble the bottom of an old coke bottle, I find that the hardest thing for me about tuba playing is seeing the music when playing my (front action) Alex.
But my (top action) recording bell Conn is a piece of cake. Albeit a HUGE piece of somewhat ungainly cake.
I have to agree with you about preferring the ergonomics of the front action horns. But I think if I had a front action recording bell set up I'd have to cut a window in the bell!
And by the way, I also know several guys who use top action horns because of right eye vision problems.
It actually is something to think about.
