She views a Masters Degree as something for someone to pursue who can't get a gig, or for someone who eventually wants to teach.
She may be right. I don't really think most orchestral musicians have Masters Degrees. In fact, some of the top professionals in her field (Principal Oboists in the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, for instance) have no music degrees at all.
Right now, she's sort of being paid to pursue an "Artist Certificate".
