Thanks to everyone who responded to my question! I feel better about passing over the St Pete and giving it some time. If I'm resourceful I do have access to a variety of horns-- I've started tapping into the "underground tuba network"- lots of guys with all sorts of horns laying around-- some good, some bad. They even have a few at the high school where we practice that I've been trying.
There's a meeting this weekend at one of the high schools where a few companies will be present with horns so I'm going to try a few there.
I'll let you know what I choose! Thanks again.
