1. Hindemith Sonata. When it's played with power and musicality, it is quite effective despite the demands it makes on the accompanist. It's none the worse for having been played too often, but the musical interpretation needs power and authority as much as beauty, and that's why it seems to me so characteristic of the tuba. To me, Roger Bobo made the landmark recording.

2. Bach unaccompanied flute sonata (as played by Pokorny). Far more demanding than the Hindemith both technically and musically, without being a show-off piece, which I usually don't much like.
