Make sure the band is IMPRESSIVE. That was the problem at my high school. We had the top marching band in the state for several years while i was young..so the Band of Silver was THE thing to want to be in. But a new group of students began to make up the band, those who didn't want to work, and the band began to suck. I saw interest in marching band fall to nil by the time I graduated, and it's still getting worse. A middle school student will not want to join a mediocre group--they'll go join another club, or form a rock band.

Maybe this isn't your problem. But if you've got a GREAT marching band, you don't want the students who'd rather not be there. They'll start the long downward slope to failure.
