I think that those who compare the old 1950's-60's Alex's to modern tubas are being very unfair.

In their day, Alex tubas' intonation and sound were about the best available, and just like other manufacturers, Alexander's designs and intonation have greatly improved over the years. Alex', though a small maker, is a competitive and very viable choice today. (Actually, many of these makers are "small". The consumers of such products (professional quality tubas) is a miniscule nothing, even compared to, say, even professional quality bass trombones.

Once the buffalo herds of piston-fad tuba players have thundered across the prairie, modern Alex tubas will receive the attention they most rightly deserve. Though not geographically convenient for everyone in the U.S., I think we're quite lucky to have Tony bringing them in. Those who overlook them will simply end up with the typical 2155 (etc.) fare.
