If you're referring to my post about old thinner metal Mirafone bells spider cracking (??), that's only if they were school-owned.

Society (not tuba making) has severely deteriorated over the last thirty years, and thinner-belled Mirafone tubas bought new in the '70's and '80's by schools have been totally destroyed by the inmates.

Had these instruments been privately owned by sane individuals, they would have held up indefinitely.

Finally, if a school owns one of these bells that has been crumpled three or four (ten or twelve?) times (by public school inmates) but not yet cracked, it is strongly advisable to replace such bells as they are severely weakened and the next kick or throw could likely crack the vintage-re-re-re-repaired bell of a newly-overhauled and relacquered instrument.

If I came across an old, well cared for Mirafone, the gauge of the bell would not be an issue at all.
