I'm sure that you aren't aware that you're nibbling around my pet-peeves, attempting to define instrument styles by where they happened to have been made. You can take this categorization just so far before you run into roadblocks.

King and Olds/Reynolds are the only two major happen-to-be-American companies that settled in on this approximate bore size (around .687") for their BBb large tubas. Others chose .750", .734", .716", .770" (WHOOPS!!!! a "GERMAN" bore size on an AMERICAN-MADE tuba!!!! Obviously the Conn 20J is just a copy of a German tuba.) and various other over-.700" bore sizes.

King is the only currently-made large U.S. BBb tuba (unless you count a dozen or so Kanstuls), but many U.S. manufacturers have made many tubas the years (even with ROTARY valves and CHIMNEY-shaped bells).

All I know for tubas and their players are "good" and "not".
