Let's see--you chuck each piston in a CNC lathe as a single extra step and carve some grooves in it. Benefit--lower friction, lower valve casing wear, dirt will tend to accumulate in the grooves instead of betwen the piston and the casing, The grooves themselves would tend to serve as small oil reservoirs...

And I don't see how they'd be that much more difficult to repair.

Okay, so how about a rotary valve that requires less than 90 degrees of rotation to do its job?
