It certainly isn't. The most unforgettable two nights of my life were spent performing the Berlioz Requiem with a regional group that couldn't afford to pay the extra brass players. I've gotten good money (on occasion) to sit in an orchestra pit and get bored out of my skull, and I've had freebie gigs that were more rewarding than anything. It ain't about the cash.
Of course, that's easy to say, when you have a day job! ;-)
